HAGERSTOWN — Traffic on Robinwood Drive has been shifted to the northbound side of the road between Medical Campus Road near Robinwood Professional Center and Kings Crest Boulevard near Hagerstown Community College, leaving motorists with a single lane of traffic in each direction.

The traffic shift is part of Phase I of the Robinwood Drive Corridor Improvement Project, Washington County said in a news release issued Monday morning.

Just south of Academic Boulevard, work crews were directing traffic Monday afternoon as they put up jersey barriers along the southbound side of Robinwood Drive.

On Sunday morning, a Washington County Sheriff’s deputy helped direct traffic on Robinwood Drive, near Medical Campus Road, after some drivers were confused by the road-improvement project and drove the wrong way on Robinwood Drive, Deputy 1st Class Aaron Horton said.

Horton said there weren’t any accidents Sunday morning, but some southbound cars drove into the northbound lanes south of Medical Campus Road due to confusion.

The temporary traffic flow now has one northbound lane, a southbound left-turn lane to go into the Elks Club parking lot and a southbound lane, north of Medical Campus Road.

The single lane traffic is expected to be in effect for “several months,” according to the release.

Approaching Medical Campus Road from the northbound side, the middle lane, which used to be the through lane, is blocked off by barrels, and the right-turn lane has become the through lane.

The Robinwood Drive Corridor II Project is a project to widen Robinwood Drive in the area from Meritus Medical Center to HCC and replace traffic signals with a roundabout at the HCC entrance at Youngstoun Drive, according to the release.

The Robinwood Drive Corridor II Project is designed to improve the transportation network by creating a pedestrian and vehicle-friendly corridor, the release says. As part of Phases I and II, new lanes will be constructed on the east and west sides of Robinwood Drive and will transform a 1.2-mile stretch of Robinwood Drive into a four-lane roadway.

Phase III will complete the construction of a roundabout to replace the traffic signals at the Hagerstown Community College entrance and Youngstoun Drive.

The Robinwood Drive improvements are part of the multiphase transportation improvement project to the Mt. Aetna Technology Park area.
