Joseph R. Harris, 62, of Hagerstown passed away early Friday morning, Aug. 2, 2013, in the presence of his loving family.

Born Sunday, May 6, 1951, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late James and Cleona (Bowman) Harris.

Joseph attended and was an alumnus of South Hagerstown High School.

He retired from the Archdiocese of Baltimore in February 2011. During his 26 years of employment with the archdiocese, Joseph served as the maintenance supervisor extraordinaire for St. Ann Catholic Church in Hagerstown. He had held other jobs in the Hagerstown area, however, Joseph was most proud of his job at St. Ann’s. To Joseph, the many things he did in the performance of his duties at St. Ann were not just a job, but his calling. Joseph was never happier than when someone commented on the beautiful array of his work. He was never more pleased than when he could be of use.

One snowy morning, Joseph walked from his home on Belview Avenue to St. Ann’s Church parking lot in a full snowstorm just to make certain that the parking lot was being cleared of snow for churchgoers to park. Joseph was devoted to his job at St. Ann’s.

As a result of his employment and love for St. Ann’s, Joseph, his wife, Shirley, and son, Joshua, became members of the church.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 40 years, Shirley (Clever) Harris; daughter, Jennifer Everhart and husband, Daniel, and son, Joshua E. Harris, all of Hagerstown; sisters, Beverly Miller and husband, Warren, of Greencastle, Pa., and Patsy Thompson of St. Thomas, Pa.; brother, David Harris of Waynesboro, Pa.; one beloved granddaughter, Rachel Layne Everhart; and dogs, Molly and Dusty. He is also mourned by his sister-in-law, Carol (Clever) Porciuncula; and brother-in-law, Ronald E. Clever, also of Hagerstown.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown. Interment will follow immediately in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Harman, Kenworthy & Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
