Marguerite E. Cyr marks 100th birthday

Marguerite E. Cyr of Hagerstown turned 100 on Sunday. She has been a major contributor to the area in the arts, Girl Scouting and the Red Cross, as well as a long-standing citizen of Hagerstown, moving here in 1959, according to her daughter, Marguerite H. Cyr.

Marguerite E. Cyr, an artist and longtime community volunteer, was named a Woman of Distinction in 2010.

She was the first president of the Shawnee Girl Scout Council and has been a longtime volunteer with the American Red Cross.

She is a former art teacher at St. Maria Goretti High School and is a renowned artist in the Tri-State area.

School supply giveaway

Shiloh united Methodist Church, 19731 Shiloh Church Road in Hagerstown, will have a school supply giveaway Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 6:30 p.m.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

There will also be activities for children.

Super sale

All clothing and clothing accessories have been reduced to $1 each at Repeat Performance, the thrift store supported by the Meritus Medical Center Auxiliary.

The sale starts Tuesday and runs through Saturday.

The shop is behind Dunkin’ Donuts, on Crestwood Drive, off Pennsylvania Avenue in Hagerstown.

Proceeds from the sale go to the auxiliary, which sponsors scholarships in the community.


TOPS 0077

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 0077 in Hagerstown reported a loss of 30 3/4 pounds for the week.

The best TOPS losers were Sue Young and Bruce Young. The best KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) losers were Louise Kline and Dorothy Smith.

Mildred Hluchey presented the program on eating out, especially at picnics and restaurants.

TOPS Area Captain Parilee Barber gave a report on her trip to International Recognition Days.

The group meets Mondays at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown. The meeting is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
