MIHI Inc. recently donated $5,500 to Western Maryland Hospital Center’s Therapeutic Garden Committee to purchase a wheelchair-accessible swing.

For more than 25 years, MIHI’s mission has been to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, and especially to make recreational activities more accessible.

One side of the swing has a large platform designed to accommodate wheelchairs, with a bench seat on the other side. Thanks to MIHI, hospital center residents and their families and friends have been enjoying the swing this summer.

In the past few years, the therapeutic garden committee renewed many of the hospital gardens. With contributions from local foundations, it has completed construction of the Fletcher Fitness Trail, which includes exercise stations for able-bodied participants and those in wheelchairs, and now added the new handicap-accessible swing.

The hospital center is on Pennsylvania Avenue in Hagerstown.
