Carolyn Roney, a bocce coach for Special Olympics, gave a demonstration on how the game is played at a recent Tri-State Civitan Club meeting.

Several members had never seen the game played before and enjoyed seeing gold medal Special Olympian Margie French and Dolly Hall show how to throw a ball.

Roney showed the different balls for playing indoors and outdoors, and explained the rules.

While the sport has been around for a long time, beginning in Italy and sometimes referred to as lawn bowling, it is increasing in popularity.

“Bocce” in Italian means to kiss and in this game it is to kiss the “white” ball.
