August 04, 2013

A 56-year-old man was taken to The Johns Hopkins Burn Center after he showed up at a building housing the city fire marshal’s office on Church Street Sunday morning with burns to his right hand, said Hagerstown Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven.

The victim, Benjamin Mock Jr., told authorities he burned his hand after he knocked over a candle on West Bethel Street, DeHaven said.

Mock arrived at the Church Street office at about 9:30 a.m., DeHaven said.

DeHaven said authorities have not had a chance to talk to Mock since he gave an initial statement about the incident, which remains under investigation, DeHaven said.

Mock, who had nonlife-threatening injuries, was transported to The Johns Hopkins Burn Center by Community Rescue Service, DeHaven said.
