Phillip R. "Phil" Smith, 60, of Newton, N.C., passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at his residence.

Born July 27, 1952, in Washington County, Md., he was the son of Raymond Elwood Smith and the late Phyllis E. Martin Smith.

He attended First Presbyterian Church in Newton, and was a truck driver and dispatcher for 30 years with Cargo Transporters in Claremont, N.C.

He enjoyed rebuilding computers, working on model airplanes and spending time with his family.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jenny Sue Solony.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 38 years, Brenda Culp Smith; three sons, Capt. Joshua J. Smith and wife, Wendy, of Wildomar, Calif., and P. Nathanael Smith and Joseph B. Smith, both of Newton; two brothers, Fred Solony of Mason City, Iowa, and Michael Solony of Tularosa, N.M.; three sisters, Jan Sensenbaugh of Hagerstown, Md., Tonya Carlson of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Penny Gourley of Mason City; one grandson, Harrison Smith of Wildomar; nephews Chris Sensenbaugh, Travis Sensenbaugh and Derik Culp; nieces, Katie Gourley and Kelly Gourley; great-nephews, Michael Sensenbaugh, Cory Sensenbaugh and Mason Sensenbaugh; and great-niece, Hayden Ulrich.

The memorial service was held Saturday, July 27, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church in Newton, followed by a reception to celebrate his life.

Funeral arrangements were provided by Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home, Newton.
