PONY-14 East Zone Tournament

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Bryce Ruppenthal allowed just two hits while striking out 11 in six innings, and Hagerstown struck for five runs in the second inning and beat Reidsville, N.C., 7-1 on Wednesday.

Hagerstown advanced to the winners’ bracket final and will face an opponent to be determined on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The winner of the East Zone Tournament will advance to the PONY World Series.

Ruppenthal allowed two hits and a walk to load the bases in the first inning, but got out of the jam with a strikeout, then settled in and was untouchable.

“Ruppenthal was in control today. He threw an outstanding game,” Hagerstown manager Dave Barr said. “He pitched smart and when he was ahead in the count, he got a lot of strikeouts on balls outside the zone. His changeup was working really well.”

Matt Harsh led off the second with a single and Mitchell Wilson walked to set up Bryce Scharenbroch’s RBI double to deep center to open the scoring for Hagerstown. Isaac Schlotterbeck walked to load the bases and Jake Arnone drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 before Harrison Barger’s RBI single made it 3-0.

Gage Kyler singled with two outs to reload the bases, and Ryan Downes drilled a two-run single to make it 5-0.

Zach Martin’s pinch-hit home run with one out in the sixth gave Hagerstown a 6-0 lead. Harsh capped Hagerstown’s scoring in the seventh with an RBI double down the left-field line after a walk.

Brandon Gooden relieved Ruppenthal in the seventh and allowed a run on three hits and a walk, but struck out the side to close out the victory.

Harsh and Barger each had two hits for Hagerstown.
