Courses offered at Barr Construction Institute at Associated Builders and Contractors

The following courses will be offered at the Barr Construction Institute at Associated Builders and Contractors, 530 N. Locust St. in Hagerstown:

CPR/AED and First Aid   
Instructor: Doug Walker
Friday, Aug. 9, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 
Registration deadline: Aug. 2
American Safety and Health Institute card issued upon completion.
The course meets all MOSH and COMAR regulations.  
Doug Walker has been a fire/EMS captain in the Washington, D.C., area for 23 years, and has more than 20 years teaching experience.
Cost: ABC members, $60; nonmembers, $90                     
Class minimum: five; class limit: 20

Maryland Backflow Prevention Certification
Instructor: Jim Yacovissi
Aug. 9 to 11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
Registration deadline: Aug. 2; recertification: Aug. 10
This is a Maryland state approved certification course. After passing the written and practical examinations, students receive a certificate and wallet card.    
Cost: certification, $535; re-certification, $320        
Class minimum: five; class limit: 20

Electrical Journey and Master Exam Preparation
Instructor: Bob Runyon
Monday, Aug. 19, and Tuesday, Aug. 20, 6 to 9 p.m.
Registration deadline: Aug. 12
The course prepares students to take the electrical exam.
The seminar covers a wide range of knowledge on such topics as general/theory, wiring and protection, wiring methods and materials and other related topics that will be covered on the electrical exam.
“Stallcup’s Master Electrician’s Study Guide” is used in the class and includes more than 2,000 questions on topics including, services, switchboard, grounding and bonding, over-current protection, feeder-circuits, and raceways. Students must bring “Stallcup’s Master Electrician’s Study Guide”
Cost: members, $110; nonmembers, $170

Maryland HVAC-R Exam Prep Course
Instructor: Blaine Mowen
Monday, Aug. 19, and Wednesday, Aug. 21, 6 to 9 p.m.  
Registration deadline: Aug. 12
The course prepares students to take the Maryland HVAC/R Journeyman’s Exam.
Attendees should bring: “2006 International Mechanical Code;” “Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning;”  “ACCA Ductulator (Duct Slide Rule);”  “Ugly’s Electrical References;”  and  “Guide to HVAC/R Certification and Competency Tests.”
Participants can purchase books from ABC.

EPA CERT 608
Instructor: Bernie Bussard
Monday, Aug. 26, Tuesday, Aug. 27, and Wednesday, Aug. 28, 5 to 8 p.m.
Registration deadline: Aug. 19    
The course is designed to prepare students for the EPA section 608 technician certification exam.
It includes: proper handling methods for refrigerants; review of EPA 608 study guide and EPA regulations; and proctored EPA certification exam on the final day.
Cost: ABC members, $135 (includes book and exam); nonmembers, $175     
Retest: $45
Class minimum: eight; class limit: 15       

Maryland Plumbing Exam Prep Course
Instructor: Dave Hildebrand
Monday, Sept. 30, and Tuesday Oct. 1, 6 to 9 p.m.  
Registration deadline: Sept. 23
The course prepares students to take the Maryland Plumbing Journeyman’s and Master Exam.
Materials needed for class, must have for entry:

  • “National Standard Plumbing Code Illustrated” 2006 or 2009
  • “National Fuel Gas Code; NFPA 54, ANSI 223.1” 2006 or 2009
  • “Mathematics for Plumbers and Pipefitters 7th Edition” by Lee Smith    
  • Working calculator; notepaper
Cost: ABC members, $120; nonmembers, $175
Class minimum: three; maximum: 12

EPA Certified Lead Paint Renovator Course — 5-year certification   
Instructor: Aerosol Monitoring and Analysis
Date to be announced; 8:30 a.m. to 4. p.m.

A federal regulation called the Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule went into effect on April 22, 2010. It requires renovation and painting contractors and other trades who work in pre-1978 housing and who might disturb painted surfaces to become lead-certified renovators by taking a one-day course about using “Lead Safe Work Practices” on the job. The course will meet the EPA training requirements for those performing renovations in pre-1978 housing and child-care facilities.
Students who complete the course will become certified renovators and know how to perform all work using lead-safe work practices. Students will also learn how to perform acceptance testing for their work.  
Cost: ABC members, $195 (includes books and materials); nonmembers, $225
Class minimum: 10; Class limit: 20       

OSHA 10-Hour Course
Instructor: Mark Lord
Thursday, Aug. 22, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday Aug. 23, 8 to 11 a.m.
Registration deadline: Aug. 15
This is a 10-hour certification course. The program is intended to provide instruction on a variety of construction and industry safety and health standards.
Certification cards issued from the OSHA Training Institute.
Cost: ABC members, $225; nonmembers, $275   
Class minimum: eight; Class limit: 40
