Mary Ellen Scallion, 84, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013, in Montclair, N.J.

A funeral Mass and burial will be offered Thursday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Hagerstown. A repast will follow the services.

Mary Ellen was born July 24, 1928, in Lewiston, Maine, to Daniel Ivory and Mary McCarthy.

Mary Ellen and her brother, Edward, grew up in Maine and finished high school in Hampton Roads, Va.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from Washington College in Chestertown, Md., in 1950.

She started her career as a social worker for the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Baltimore, Md.

She then married Nicholas John Scallion and became a loving wife, mother and homemaker.

After she gave birth to her five children, she returned to work as a nursery school aide, ultimately becoming director of St. John’s Nursery School, where she retired in 1995.


She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes in West Orange, N.J., and St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Hagerstown.

She was also a member of the Washington County Museum Singer Society and the American Association of University Women, or AAUW.

Her interests included her grandchildren, reading, shopping, traveling and playing bridge.

Mary Ellen was a joyful person whose spirit touched all she encountered.

She was the devoted wife of the late Nicholas Scallion; cherished mother to Gerald, Anne, Mark, Matt and Nancy; and beloved grandmother to 11 beautiful grandchildren, Kyle, Nicholas, Madeline, Paige, Caroline, Sarah, Natalie, Keri, Jake, Henry and Meghan, whom she loved with all her heart.
