PONY-14 Super Regional

BOARDMAN, Ohio — Hagerstown advanced into the championship round with a 12-2 rout of Prospects Two, out of Cleveland, in Saturday’s winners’ bracket final.

Hagerstown scored eight runs on 10 hits in the third inning to take control. Mitchell Wilson’s two-run home run highlighted the inning.

Wilson also went the distance on the mound in the five-inning contest, striking out nine.

Bryce Ruppenthal went 4-for-4, Matt Harsh had three hits and Ryan Downes had two hits and two RBIs for Hagerstown. Harrison Barger and Brooks Keller each had two hits.

Hagerstown opened the tournament on Friday with a 9-0 victory over Tuscarawas.

Ruppenthal, Brandon Gooden and Zach Martin combined on a one-hitter. Ruppenthal threw five innings of no-hit ball with nine strikeouts, and Gooden and Martin each worked an inning to cap the shutout.

Gage Kyler went 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs to lead Hagerstown’s offense. Downes had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. Barger had two hits, including a home run, and Jake Arnone also had two hits.

The championship round begins Sunday at 11 a.m. Hagerstown needs one win to claim the title, while its opponent must win twice.

Maryland Junior Tournament

Talbot 5, Valley 4

RISING SUN, Md. — Talbot scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning on Friday night to rally past Valley and win the state title.

Valley, which won the losers’ bracket title on Thursday, needed to beat Talbot twice to win the title, but Talbot finished off an unbeaten run through the tournament instead.

Ryan Kolich had two hits, while Alex Myers and Dez Johnson each drove in a run for Valley. Kolich pitched 5 1/3 innings and struck out four.

Valley scored all its runs in the third inning, taking a 4-1 lead. Talbot scored a run in the fourth to get within two before the seventh.
