Thumbs up, Thumbs down - July 27

July 27, 2013

Thumbs up to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration, which is taking advantage of technology to save money on printing and postage. The MVA has saved $65,000 since it began last year emailing driver’s license renewal notices to those who provide an email address on the MVA’s website.

Thumbs up to the dozens of umpires who have volunteered their time over the past few weeks so hundreds of Washington County boys and girls can participate in baseball and softball all-star tournaments. These volunteers, without whom the games wouldn’t be played, often endure criticism from parents and coaches over calls they felt were made in error.

Thumbs down to Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun, who this week accepted a 65-game suspension from Major League Baseball for violating the league’s drug policy. Braun, who had a similar suspension overturned on appeal last season, held a press conference before this season proclaiming his innocence and calling himself a victim of a failed process.
