MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has identified the Martinsburg man who was killed Friday night after being struck by a train behind an apartment complex off Polo Greene Drive north of Martinsburg.

Vincent T. Brown, 43, of Martinsburg was killed after walking into the path of a slow-moving train, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The incident has been ruled accidental, deputies said.

Preliminary findings said Brown might not have paying attention when he attempted to cross the track, deputies said.

Berkeley County Sheriff Kenneth Lemaster said Brown appeared to have been wearing earbuds when he was struck.

The incident on the CSX-owned track was reported by rail-line police on Friday at about 6:45 p.m., a Berkeley County Emergency Services supervisor said.

The operator saw the man, but was unable to get the train, which was backing up, stopped in time, Lemaster said.
