LEGION BASEBALL

CUMBERLAND, Md. — Funkstown Post 211 is hoping it plays only one baseball game today.

If it does, Funkstown will have claimed the Maryland state championship.

On Friday, Post 211 edged Cecil County 11-10 to reach the championship round this morning at 10 against Damascus.

Funkstown, unbeaten with five wins, needs only one more for the title. Damascus will have to beat Funkstown twice to win the state crown.

Post 211 jumped out to an 11-2 lead, then held on as Cecil struck for eight runs in the eighth inning — aided by several Funkstown errors, as only one of seven runs scored against Hunter McKinley was earned.

Brad Spickler came in for the save, preserving the victory for Ryan Kinter, who threw seven innings.

Funkstown slammed out 15 hits, including three each by Charles Cvijanovich, C.J. Owings, Brandon Toloso and Colby Johnson. Johnson had three RBIs and Cvijanovich scored four runs.

BRISTOL, Conn. — After pulling off an upset win on Thursday in the Little League Eastern Regional, Sharpsburg Little League — the Maryland state champs — lost to New York 10-5 on Friday in the semifinals.

Sharpsburg shocked unbeaten Rhode Island 14-8 in the quarterfinals after posting a 1-3 record in pool play.

“I’m proud of the girls and they gained a lot of experience,” Sharpsburg manager Dave Neff said. “We did well for this being only the third year of softball.”

On Friday, Sharpsburg fell behind 8-0 after three innings before scoring four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Karly Payne had two of Sharpsburg’s six hits and was on base three times. Taylor Neff added a double.
