GETTYSBURG, Pa. – David Heim was named to the dean’s list for the spring  semester at Gettysburg College. He just completed his freshman year and is double majoring in history and political science. The 2012 graduate of Boonsboro High School is the son of Ed and Janet Heim of Hagerstown.


R. Lee Viar IV of Hagerstown participated in the 2013 Class of the Management Development Program in Higher Education at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., in June and earned a post-doctoral certificate.

The program addressed various management and leadership issues in higher education at the various levels of academic leadership from department chair, dean or president. 

The 104 participants in the class represented 37 states and 17 countries.

 Viar has lived in Hagerstown for the last 40 years. He graduated from South Hagerstown High School in 1984. In addition, he graduated from then Hagerstown Junior College in 1989, Frostburg State University with a Bachelor of Science in business administration in 1999, FSU with a Master’s of business administration concentrating in management and marketing in 2001, and from Capella University with a PhD in post-secondary adult education and training in 2007.

He is the interim program chair in the College of Business and Management as well as a professor at Colorado Technical University and is president of ANTSHE, a nonprofit organization helping nontraditional students graduate. He is a published author of a book and numerous articles, and has been a guest speaker at a number of universities and colleges.


Chad Lowry of Big Pool received the President's List Award at Clearwater Christian College for scholastic achievement during the spring semester. 

Lowry, a sophomore criminal justice major, is a graduate of Heritage Academy in Hagerstown.

He is the son of Michael Albert and Shelby Jean Lowry of Big Pool.


HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — Jason Richard Halmo of Jefferson, Md., has been awarded a President’s Award to attend Hampden-Sydney College in  the fall.

He is a graduate of Brunswick (Md.) High School.

He is the son of Jonathan and Colette Halmo of Jefferson.


LARAMIE, Wyo. — Scott C. Carpenter of Myersville, Md., was named to the provost’s honor roll for the spring semester at The University of Wyoming.


HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.  — Janel Mayo of Frederick, Md. was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Hofstra University.

Mayo, a member of the Class of 2014, is majoring in geology.
