Funkstown wins second state game

LEGION BASEBALL

CUMBERLAND, Md. — Funkstown Post 211 spent four hours on the baseball field Wednesday before coming away with an 8-6 victory in the Maryland State Legion Tournament.

Funkstown battled Talbot Post 70 before breaking a 5-5 tie with three runs in the top of the 12th.

Ryan Kinter allowed a Talbot run in the bottom of the 12th, but preserved the win for Brad Spickler, who threw three innings of relief.

Brandon Toloso, J.T. Root and Colby Johnson had two hits apiece and Toloso and Johnson each had two RBIs.

Talbot had a 2-0 lead after seven innings before Funkstown rallied with four runs in the eighth.

Funkstown, now 2-0 in the tournament, defeated Cecil 1-0 on Tuesday as Root and Zach Lucas combined on a three-hit shutout. Root had 13 strikeouts.

Johnson had two hits and also the game-winning RBI with a single in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Funkstown continues in the tournament tonight at 7 against the winner of Wednesday’s late game between Damascus and Sandy Springs.

Maryland Junior Tournament

Valley 10, Rising Sun 0

RISING SUN, Md. — McCoy Dutrow had three hits to lead Valley in a shutout victory over Rising Sun in the Maryland State Junior Tournament.

Valley scored eight runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Ryan Kolich’s two-run double that scored Robert Tracey and Dutrow.

Kolich and Alex Myers had two hits each for Valley.

Robert Tracey pitched 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win and combined with Kolich and Ryan Bywaters on a two-hitter.

Valley will play West Salisbury today at 7.

Maryland Senior Tournament

North Caroline 14, Valley 11

HURLOCK, Md. — North Caroline defeated Valley 14-11 to win the Maryland State Senior Tournament on Wednesday.

Valley overcame an 8-0 deficit to get within one run in the seventh.

The comeback was short lived as North Caroline added six insurance runs in the seventh to extend to a 14-7 lead.

Valley mounted another rally in the bottom of the seventh but fell short, only scoring four runs in the frame.

Josh Miller had two hits and three RBIs and Chris Hutzell, Steve Clapper, Hunter Martin and T.J. Kuhn had two hits each for Valley.

Sharpsburg 7-8 Blue-Gray Tournament

Clear Spring 15, National 5

Clear Spring: Nathan Myers 2 hits; Caiden Bachtell 5 Ks.

National: Trevor Trovinger 2 hits.



YOUTH SOFTBALL

11-12 East Regional

Sharpsburg drops two

BRISTOL, Conn. — Sharpsburg Little League fell to 1-3 in pool play at the East Regional.

The Maryland champions lost to Pennsylvania 11-2 on Wednesday, following a 3-1 loss to New York on Tuesday.

No other information was provided on the games.
