Bessie V. Smith, 80, of Skunk Hollow Road in Sabillasville, Md., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at St. Catherine's Nursing Center in Emmitsburg, Md. She was a breast cancer survivor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Hamilton Smith, on April 5, 2006.

Born Feb. 6, 1933, in Clear Spring, Md., she was the daughter of the late Harry M. and Minerva I. (Householder) Cosgrove.

She was a graduate of Smithsburg High School and Victor Cullen Nursing School with a licensed practical nursing degree.

She was employed by the state of Maryland for 30 years at the Victor Cullen Center in Sabillasville.

She was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Sabillasville.

She is survived by two daughters, Brenda E. Smith of Sabillasville and Janet R. Yount of Walkersville, Md.; two sisters, Pearl Heffner and Dorothy Fishack, both of Hagerstown; one sister-in-law, Gladys Fitz of Waynesboro, Pa.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Roger C. Smith; two sisters, Pauline Pryor and Mary Anna Powell; and seven brothers, Harry, C. Elwood, Harold, James, Earl, Paul and John Cosgrove.

Services will be Saturday, July 27, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg, with Pastors Barry L. Taylor and Al Deal officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, Cascade, Md.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will open Friday at 9 a.m. for the convenience of the public.
