Greensboro beats Suns in the ninth

July 23, 2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Juancito Martinez’s single to left scored Cameron Flynn with the winning run as the Greensboro Grasshoppers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Hagerstown Suns 3-2 in a South Atlantic League game on Tuesday afternoon.

Viosergy Rosa led off the ninth by drilling a double to right off Suns reliever Bryan Harper, who was then relieved by Gilberto Mendez (1-1). After a sacrifice bunt, Cameron Flynn smacked an RBI double to right to tie the game.

Mendez got Jose Behar to fly out to center for the second out, then intentionally walked Cody Keefer before Martinez lined the game-winning hit to left for the Grasshoppers (48-52, 15-16).

The Suns (57-42, 19-13) fell  a half-game behind West Virginia in the race for the Northern Division’s second-half title. Hagerstown won the first-half title and is assured of a playoff spot.

Greensboro pitchers held Hagerstown to just two hits. Chad James allowed two runs on two hits and five walks in five innings, striking out seven. Matt Milroy worked three hitless innings, allowing just one walk while striking out three. Beau Wright (1-0) got the win with a 1-2-3 ninth.

The Suns took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth off James. Brandon Miller drew a one-out walk and Will Piwnica-Worms was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Khayyan Norfork doubled to left to bring home Miller and move Piwnica-Worms to third. Walks to Craig Manuel and Stephen Perez forced in the second run.

Greensboro cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth off Hagerstown starter Nick Lee. Alex McClure, Colin Moran and Matt Juengel led off with consecutive singles to produce the run, but Lee wiggled out of the jam to keep the Suns in front.

Lee allowed one run on seven hits while striking out six in six innings for the Suns.

Rosa finished with three hits — two of them doubles — for the Grasshoppers.
