Mail Call - July 23

July 22, 2013

“I read the article about the city council shutting down the feeding of people in the city parking lot, and I want to paraphrase their action by saying, ‘Carl Booker and Soul Food Ministries, we don’t mind you feeding the poor, but would you please just hide them somewhere?’”
— Halfway

“I am appalled at the callous decision that the Hagerstown City Council has made about not allowing organizations to use parking lots for the distribution of free food. They act like the homeless are some kind of a plague that they have to get rid of. Every city has homeless. Big congratulations to Carl Booker and all the good work that he does, and hopefully, God will guide them some place where they can take care of the homeless.”
— Boonsboro

“I got a real laugh this morning in the paper, reading that Hagerstown is still deciding how to spend the state money. That’s because the state is overseeing the spending. We don’t have problems spending money, if it’s just local taxpayers’ money, where there’s no supervision.”
— Hagerstown

“Regarding the call about animals being locked in a car, I always thought the humane society had an emergency number to call. And I cannot believe that the police department said they don’t handle such matters. What kind of a police department do we have that wouldn’t investigate that? Now furthermore, what kind of people do we have that left their animals locked in cars, especially in these hot days? Don’t they have any sense? So please, if you call the police department, I certainly hope that they will respond.”
— Washington County

“I have a question. Why is it that the voters vote people out of office, and then the city and the county continue to bring them back and give them jobs and so on and so forth? ... I think it’s time they redo their whole organization.”
— Hagerstown

“Herald-Mail, thanks for reporting in the 12th, about the EDC and the county commissioners and the city, about the field of dreams, the Suns. People, read that article, especially what Mr. McKinley said. We’re donating $400,000 a year for two decades towards that. We are dead broke ... $200 million in debt, and the county commissioners and Mr. Bowers should remember, he was one of the county commissioners (who) was involved with all this.”
— Hagerstown

“I note that the newspaper is reporting that in 1981, the Washington County commissioners faced a difficult decision regarding the Hagerstown Suns. And I also note that the former county commissioner, Ron Bowers, among others, is totally supporting the building of a new stadium. The question that arises out of all this, 32 years later, was any of that worth it? We’re still haggling about it. Do any of the current or former elected officials who are supporting this attend the ball games?”
— Hagerstown

“As far as the comics, I love the ‘Lockhorns,’ but that ‘Snuffy Smith,’ that’s just downright corny, like some 5-year-old wrote them or something.”
— Hagerstown

“Sharpsburg caller, if you and the Republican Party are so against this president, why did you put him in office? That’s right, how many Republicans changed parties to vote in the Democrat primary, so they could get Barack Obama nominated instead of Hillary Clinton? Republican strategy failed, and it is failing and ruining this country.”
— Hagerstown

“I think the City of Hagerstown, that $100,000 that was allocated for redevelopment, they ought to use some of that and redevelop the streets of Hagerstown. They are terrible.”
— Hagerstown

“To the phone caller who was acting self-righteous about Iraq: What about Afghanistan? President Obama’s army’s still there, killing people. And what about Benghazi, where he was playing golf while four people died, or talking to Jay-Z, or whatever else he was doing. Get off your high horse, pal.”
— Chambersburg, Pa.
