Richard Eugene “Tom” Jones, 85, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at his home.

Born Aug. 3, 1927, in Fort Gibson, Okla., Richard was the son of the late Richard Mangus Jones and Dora Grigsby Jones.

He was raised in Hope, Ark., and graduated from Hope Arkansas High School in 1945. He graduated from Shepherd College in 1953 and received a M.E. from Shippensburg State College in 1964.

He was employed as a teacher at South Potomac Junior High School, a teacher-coordinator at North Hagerstown High School and as vice principal at Williamsport High School, retiring in 1988.

Richard served in the United States Army for 4 1/2 years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty K. (Swartz) Jones; his son, Richard B. Jones and wife, Penny, and his grandson, Richard B. Jones Jr., all of Hagerstown.

Richard was a member of National Education Association, Washington County Retired Educational Personnel, Medairy Lodge 140 AF&AM of Williamsport, Md., Scottish Rite 32nd Degree of Cumberland, Md., The Alsatia Club of Hagerstown, The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 378 of Hagerstown, The American Legion Post 202 of Williamsport  and the Washington County Historical Society.

The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, on Tuesday at 6 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Holder officiating. 

A graveside service at Rosedale Cemetery in Martinsburg, W.Va., will be held at a later date.
