Discovery Station plans science week for girls

Discovery Station will hold its Amazing Science Week for girls from Aug. 5 to 9.

It is a hands-on, educational learning experience to introduce girls to engineering and science disciplines.

It is geared for those entering fourth, fifth and sixth grades.

There will be two sessions with five themes:

• Kitchen chemistry — acids/bases

• Flight

• Storms and environments

• Sound and music

• Vision — “The Wonder of Sight”

This is the first program where parents/grandparents will not attend with the girls.

There will be 15 girls in each session. The morning session will be from 10 a.m. to noon and the afternoon session will be from 2 to 4 p.m. A snack will be provided each day. The workshop costs $30. Scholarships are available.

Art exhibit planned

Valley Art Association will hold an exhibit titled “Fall Harvest Colors” Aug. 2 through Sept. 29 at the Mansion House Art Center behind City Park in Hagerstown.

The all-members exhibit will be held in the North Gallery.

The gallery is open Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.

Volleyball clinic for girls

A volleyball clinic for girls entering sixth, seventh and eighth grades will be held at E. Russell Hicks Middle School in August.

The two-day clinics are geared for those interested in playing volleyball for the school.

Bring toy to Suns game, get in at reduced price

The Antietam Detachment of the Marine Corps League will provide the color guard for the opening ceremony for the Hagerstown Suns game on Thursday against the Delmarva Shorebirds.

The Suns are planning a Christmas in July promotion to support Toys for Tots, which is a community program conducted by Antietam Detachment.

Bring a new unwrapped toy to the game and receive a discount on admission.

Hagerstown Lions Club

Tuesday — Tom Kline from Washington County Big Brothers Big Sisters will be the guest speaker.
