Civitan International plans conference here Aug. 9-11

July 21, 2013

About 100 members of the Chesapeake District of Civitan International will attend the annual convention Aug. 9-11 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Hagerstown.

Sessions during the convention include board meetings, activity planning sessions, leader training and a banquet. The keynote speaker will be newly installed International 2013-14 President Bob Robinson, a native of Perth, Ontario.

“The Tri-State Civitan Club (Hagerstown) has been planning this convention for about a year and looks forward to hosting all Civitans from the Chesapeake District,” said Jo Ann O’Toole, Civitan International director and Chesapeake District Past Gov. and meeting coordinator. “Clubs from the surrounding areas — Martinsburg, Waynesboro, Chambersburg, Frederick, Thurmont and Gettysburg — are also participating.  Although a lot of business is conducted during these meetings, it is also a time to enjoy the fellowship with other volunteers and to share ideas that all clubs can use to make the world a better place.”

The Chesapeake District encompasses 29 clubs in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Founded in 1917, Civitan International is an organization of volunteer service clubs around the world, dedicated to helping people in their own communities in a variety of ways; from collecting food for homeless shelters or volunteering at local retirement homes. They adopted an emphasis on helping those with intellectual or developmental disabilities in the 1950s. Through its Junior and Campus Civitan, the organization works to develop the next generation of leaders.
