AAUW awards scholarships to county students

Awards funded from annual used book sale proceeds

The Hagerstown Branch of the American Association of University Women awarded  scholarships to 15 Washington County students for the 2013-14 academic year.

The awards, funded by the AAUW Used Book Sale, are based primarily upon academic achievement, community service and financial need.

Scholarship recipients and their families were honored at the AAUW picnic on June 4.

First-time recipients include: Sydne Arnold, South Hagerstown High, who will attend University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and major in biomedical engineering; Elizabeth Coburn, South Hagerstown High, who plans to attend Salisbury University and major in early childhood education; Jessica Faulkner, Clear Spring High, who will attend Hagerstown Community College, with a long-term goal of becoming a physical therapist; Emily Irwin, North Hagerstown High, who will attend the University of Pittsburgh and major in bioengineering; Natalie Rudisill, Williamsport High, who will attend UMBC and major in engineering; and Carly Yost, Clear Spring High, who plans to attend Loyola University and major in biochemistry.

The following AAUW scholarship recipients, who reapplied and met academic and financial need requirements, also were awarded scholarships:

Erin Artz (Shepherd University) is studying psychology and Spanish; Anastasia Gaines (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) is majoring in communications/media with a focus on marketing; Erin Gaines (Juniata College) majors in anthropology;  Jenna Hull (University of West Virginia) is pursuing a degree in nursing; Sally Ann Johnston (Hood College) majors in early childhood education; Rebecca Litton (Towson University) is pursuing a degree in nursing; Danielle Moore (Virginia Tech) is majoring in aerospace and ocean engineering; Meredith Reynolds (Bridgewater College) is pursuing biology/pre-veterinary studies; and Sarah Stayer (St. Mary’s College of Maryland) majors in biochemistry and is pursuing a pre/med course of study.

The scholarship committee includes Jo Ellen Allenberg, Andrea Kautz, Roberta Matonak, Sheri Specht, Anne Thayer and Diane Sanford, who is chairwoman.

The scholarship committee named the following scholarships in honor of AAUW members, past and present:
The Louise Beachley Scholarship to Elizabeth Coburn; the Dorothy Cochrane Scholarship to Carly Yost; and the Joann Fillingham Scholarship to Anastasia Gaines.
