Edward Jones

Katie Schwartz of the financial services firm Edward Jones in Hagerstown recently won the firm’s Spirit of Partnership Award for outstanding performance during 2012.

Jim Weddle, the firm’s managing partner, calls Schwartz a leader in the firm and an example of what a dedicated Edward Jones financial adviser can achieve.

Schwartz was one of 1,061 financial advisers out of the firm’s more than 12,000 to receive the award.



Washington County Board of Social Services

At its May 20 meeting, the Washington County Board of Social Services elected officers for 2013-14:

Bonnie Elgin, chairwoman

William K. Beard Jr., vice chairman

Evelyn C. Williams, secretary

As leader of the board, Elgin brings 31 years of experience working for the Social Security Administration, from which she retired in 2006. She is employed part time by the Washington County Commission on Aging as a State Health Insurance Program, or SHIP, coordinator. She has been a member of the Washington County Board of Social Services since 2009.

Beard retired from Frick Co. in Waynesboro, Pa., as director of international sales. He is vice president of the board for the Washington County Commission on Aging. He also is executive director, as a volunteer, of two non-profits: MIHI Inc. and the Corp. for Assistive Technology (the Home Ramp Project). Beard’s volunteer career began with SCORE.

Williams has been an educator for Washington County Public Schools for more than 30 years. She has served as a teacher and assistant principal, and currently is supervisor for social studies. She serves on the board of directors for the Washington County Historical Society and the League of Women Voters.



Lisa Teach & Associates

FREDERICK, Md. — Lorri Gavriel recently joined the sales team of Lisa Teach & Associates of RE/MAX Achievers.

She has 17 years of experience in retail management field. 

Originally from Greensburg, Pa., Gavriel has lived in Washington County for the past four years. 

She is a wife and a mother of two children.

RE/MAX Achievers is at 8415 Progress Drive, Suite B, in Frederick.



Anderson Photographs

Melanie Anderson, owner of Anderson Photographs in Hagerstown, won four first-place ribbons of Merit, one in the portrait category and three in the illustrative category, in the Maryland Professional Photographers Association’s, or MDPPA, recent print competition.

Kathryn Turner, photographer at Anderson Photographs, received her first award as a MDPPA member for her image titled “Neist Point, Scotland,” receiving a first-place ribbon of merit.

The competition was considered a monthly competition for the MDPPA. Photographers were allowed to submit up to 10 entries in the following categories: portrait, illustrative, wedding and album design. Three judges rated all entries on lighting, posing, creativity and execution.



Hagerstown Police Department

Officers Curtis Kelley and Todd Crowder were selected as the Hagerstown Police Department’s officers of the month for May.  

In April, Kelley and Crowder responded to a homicide on Randolph Avenue in Hagerstown. They maintained the crime scene until it could be processed by forensics personnel. As the officers were preparing to leave the residence and secure it, they found a crucial piece of evidence, which led to several arrests in the case and the solving of several other unrelated shooting calls. 

Kelley has been employed by the City of Hagerstown for five years, while Crowder has been employed by the City of Hagerstown for less than a year. Both are assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division’s Charlie Platoon.



Susquehanna Bank

Christina M. Willson recently was promoted to branch relationship manager at Susquehanna Bank.

She is responsible for branch sales, service and operational goals, and is based at Susquehanna’s office at 231 N. Main St. in Boonsboro.

Willson has worked for Susquehanna for 10 years, most recently as branch operations supervisor. She has 10 years of experience in the financial services industry and is a resident of Hagerstown.



Vindobona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

BRADDOCK HEIGHTS, Md. — Laura Leopold recently joined the Vindobona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center’s leadership team as the business office manager.

Leopold will oversee business and financial functions, including accounts receivable, insurance billing and accounting reports, for the facility in Braddock Heights.

She worked for Magnolia management for eight years in business office and human resources capacities. Leopold comes to Vindobona with extensive experience in assisting families through the long-term care Medicaid application process.

She has lived in Smithsburg for the past 13 years.
