Thank you for supporting Chocolate Garden Tea

To the editor:

On Saturday, July 13, Friends of the Doleman Black Heritage Museum hosted its second annual Chocolate Garden Tea, a fundraiser for the Doleman Black Heritage Museum. It was a great time for the museum to celebrate its recent achievements while embracing its future with its supporters.

On behalf of the board of directors, we say thank you to the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau for being the event sponsor; Ms. Gerline Burnett and Ms. Antoinette Gains for donating Longaberger Baskets for the raffle; Ms. Linda Irvin-Craig of Washington County Historical Society for being our guest speaker; Professor Latonya Wrenn of Bowie State University for being our guest performer; and the members of the community who came out in support of this and other events for the DBHM.

Also, a note of thanks to U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski representative Julianna Albowicz and U.S. Rep. John Delaney representative Kevin Mack for attending and sharing in the fun and laughter these events bring about.

Through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, DBHM has created mobile exhibits that chronicle “The Beginning” of the Doleman family collection; “The Collections,” which gives the community a glimpse into a few of the artifacts within the collection; “Family,” which speaks to five families that have donated pieces to the museum; and “Jonathan Street,” which landmarks business within the historically black neighborhood of Jonathan Street, circa 1964. These four exhibits are mobile and have a child-friendly interactive component, if requested. DBHM encourages the community to contact us with any interest in having these exhibits presented to your organization, school or business by the museum curator, Wendi Perry.

DBHM is currently seeking sponsors to assist the organization in bringing back free concerts to University Plaza, and we need your support. If you would like to be an entertainment sponsor for these events or for our upcoming Masquerade Ball with a Cotton Club Twist on Friday, Nov. 8, please do not hesitate to give us a call at 301-797-5019.

Lastly, to the members of Friends of the DBHM and the staff at Applause Caterers, a heartfelt thank you for your tireless dedication and hard work that has produced yet another successful event, and thank you to The Herald-Mail for the great coverage this event received.
