Suns win, take SAL North lead from Crawdads

HICKORY, N.C. — The Hagerstown Suns passed the Hickory Crawdads atop the South Atlantic League’s Northern Division standings with an 8-2 victory Friday night.

The Suns (55-40, 17-11) won the last two games of the three-game series by a combined 23-4 score to move a half-game ahead of the Crawdads (55-42, 16-11) in the race for the second-half title.

Hagerstown won the first-half title and already is assured a playoff spot.

Hagerstown opened the scoring with a two-run third inning. Wes Schill drew a one-out walk and Narciso Mesa followed with a line-drive home run to left, his first with the Suns.

The Suns doubled their lead in the fifth. Craig Manuel and Schill drew one-out walks and Mesa reached on an infield single to load the bases. Renda drove in one run with a groundout to short, and a wild pitch allowed another run.

Hagerstown made it 7-0 with a three-run sixth. Estarlin Martinez started the inning with a triple to center and scored on Will Piwnica-Worms’ single to left. Craig Manuel hit an RBI triple to right with one out and scored on Mesa’s two-out infield swinging-bunt single.

Kylin Turnbull (4-2) worked six shutout innings in his best start of the season for the Suns, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Hickory got on the board in the seventh when Lewis Brinson took reliever Ronald Pena deep to left for his 17th home run of the year, cutting the lead to 7-1.

Hagerstown made it 8-1 in the eighth. Schill, Mesa and Renda each walked to load the bases with no outs, and Schill scored on a double-play grounder.

The Crawdads cut the lead to 8-2 in the bottom half on Ronald Guzman’s RBI double to center.

Connor Sadzeck (9-3) took the loss for the Crawdads, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Mesa finished with three hits and three RBIs for the Suns.
