CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — The Chambersburg Police Department has identified a man who was fatally shot in the 300 block of West King Street on Thursday night.

The body of David Wayne Gipe, 44, was found in front of 354 W. King St., a two-story brick duplex where he lived, at about 11:15 p.m., police said.

It was determined Gipe died of a gunshot wound, police said. Police listed the incident as a criminal homicide.

An autopsy will be performed Monday at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pa., according to Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner.

The incident was initially called in as a pedestrian traffic accident at the intersection of King and Garber streets, police said.

Chambersburg police said they are following up on several leads.

A King Street resident, who did not want to be named, because he feared for his safety, said: “My wife heard what she thought was a gunshot. It woke her up.”

The man said he didn’t hear the shot, because he was near an air conditioner.

The man said his wife told him she thought she heard the gunshot at about 11 p.m. Thursday.

The man said he saw the body, which was lying face-down in the street between two parked vehicles.

He said a white SUV was one of the vehicles, which was later towed away by authorities.

A woman who also lives near where the victim was found said: “We heard a noise, noises happen all the time.... You hear things that might be a gunshot all the time.”

The 300 block of King Street is a neighborhood comprised of older duplex homes.

Gipe’s slaying was the third in less than a year along a six-block stretch of King Street.

On Sept. 17, 2012, Calvin Warren James Beam, 18, of Chambersburg was found fatally shot in the parking lot of the Franklin Fire Co., which is at the corner of Franklin and West King streets.

Two days later, Steffawn Spriggs, of no fixed address was arrested in Harrisburg, Pa., and later charged by Chambersburg police with first-degree murder and other offenses in the killing of Beam.

Two Chambersburg men, Jason C. Shauf and Carl L. Varner, were also charged in the Oct. 22, 2012, shooting death of 29-year-old Victor Hugo Campos-Olguin at 310 E. King St.

Shauf and Varner are accused of coming to the house, herding six occupants to an upstairs room and shooting Campos-Olguin in the neck, police said at the time.

Anyone with information about Thursday’s shooting can contact the department at 717-264-4131 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, call Franklin County Crime Solvers at 717-263-3000.
