Rescue crews respond to reports of possible drowning in Potomac River

July 19, 2013

Rescue crews called off a search for a 25-year-old man who went missing while swimming in the Potomac River near Harpers Ferry Friday night after they scoured the area without success for hours, according to the Maryland Natural Resources Police.

DNR police Capt. Jerry Kirkwood said the man decided to swim across the river and began to struggle when he got into a current.

He was reported missing about 3 p.m.

A 23-year-old female companion was swimming with him at the time, and she was able to swim to safety.

Kirkwood said both of them were residents of Purcellville, Va.

“The search was called off around 8:45 p.m., because the currents were too strong for our divers,” he said.

The search is expected to resume this morning.
