Local players in Public Links

FREDERICK, Md. — Area players gained top-10 finishes in the 11th Maryland State Golf Association Amateur Public Links tournament at Custered Spires Golf Course.

Chuck Thatcher, of Beaver Creek, finished in a second-place tie with Pete DeTemple with a two-day card of 138 after shooting 70 on Wednesday.

Beaver Creek’s Ray Sheedy (142) and Ken Lampard (143) were fourth and fifth. Steve Ligi finished in a tie for seventh at 145, Bernie Deane was in a tie for 18th at 149 and Kyle Huntzberry shot 154 for a 34th-place tie out of 74 players.

Steven Delmar, of Montgomery Country Club, won the event with an 8-under-par 136.

Renegades Athletic Club 11U baseball tryouts Aug. 4-5

The Renegades travel baseball team, based in the Chambersburg, Pa., area, will have tryouts for its 11U team on Aug. 4 and Aug. 5 in Scotland, Pa. To be eligible for the 11U team, a player must be born on or after May 1, 2002. The 11U team will compete in the fall 2013 season and spring/summer 2014 season. Players interested in trying out must pre-register in order to be assigned a tryout time. If a player is unable to attend the assigned time, an alternative time may be provided. Gary Brown 5-Miler on Aug. 17

The 32nd annual Gray Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5-Mile Run will be held Aug. 17, beginning at 8 a.m., with the start/finish line at Riverbottom Park in Williamsport. Race-day registration ($30 for adults, $20 for students) will be held from 7 to 7:45 a.m. Early registration for discount rates ($25 for adults, $15 for students) will last until Aug. 7. Aspiring To Serve golf tourney on Aug. 23 at Black Rock

The ninth annual Aspiring To Serve golf tournament will be held Aug. 23 at Black Rock Golf Course. Registration starts at 7 a.m. with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. All proceeds from the tournament will be used to support the Aspiring To Serve Community Center.
