Open Airplane Afternoon planned Sunday at airport

The Hagerstown Aviation Museum will present an Open Airplane Afternoon event Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. 

Attendees will be able to climb aboard and sit in the cockpit of the 1948 Fairchild C-82 and 1953 C-119 Flying Boxcar.

They will also see other museum aircraft, such as the 1943 Fairchild PT-19 World War II Trainer and the 1928 Kreider Reisner KR-31 biplane, all built in Hagerstown.

The museum owns 19 historic aircraft, of which 14 were built in Hagerstown.

Step back in time and experience a memorable flight in the museum’s 1943 Fairchild PT-19 Primary Trainer. Thousands of allied pilots earned their wings during World War II in this historic aircraft built by Fairchild Aircraft 70 years ago in Hagerstown.

By making a $100 donation, attendees can experience the thrill of open cockpit flying. Rides will be available, weather permitting. The event will be held rain or shine.

Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

Museum merchandise, books, DVDs and hats will be for sale. Free museum magazines and a museum aircraft collection color poster will be given away.

The museum is raising funds to bring home its 1956 Fairchild C-123 Provider.

Additional Open Airplane Afternoon dates are Sunday, Aug. 18, Sunday, Sept. 22  (Wings and Wheels) and Sunday, Oct. 20.
