Gertrude W. “Gertie” Zeger, 94, of Mercersburg, Pa., passed away peacefully July 12, 2013, at her home.

Born June 16, 1919, at Little Cove, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Chester T. and Gertrude Williams.

Gertie worked at the former Jack’s Drugstore for 35 years, and for 36 years, she was employed by Modnur Pharmacy, both of Mercersburg.

A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, as well as mother-in-law, she enjoyed participating in community events such as the Mercersburg Bicentennial Celebration, the 225th celebration and the 250th celebration, as well. She was grand marshal of the 2011 Mercersburg Halloween parade and supported all the various community activities.

She loved the Outer Banks and vacationed there for 62 years, where she caught her share of fish. Gertie enjoyed sewing, playing cards and was currently a member of four card clubs. She enjoyed driving her little truck, and also found time for shuffle board and bingo.


Her memberships include Trinity United Church of Christ of Mercersburg, Mercersburg Women’s Club, life member of VFW No. 6241 Auxiliary, American Legion No. 517 Auxiliary and Mercersburg Moose Lodge No. 1790. She served for more than 60 years on the Mercersburg Borough Election Board.

Gertie endured the loss of her husband of 55 years, Lawrence C. Zeger, who died in 1995; a daughter, Alice L. “Mitzi” Swailes, who died in 2006; sons, Dennis A. Zeger, who died in 1993, and Lawrence C. Jr., “Chris” Zeger, who died in 1998; and siblings, Louise Bair and Dorothy Williams, who died at the age of 10.

Surviving family include her son, James C. and his wife, Linda Zeger, of Mercersburg; a brother, Chester Williams of Greencastle, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Gertrude W. Zeger’s life will be held Saturday, July 20, at 11 a.m. at Trinity UCC of Mercersburg, with the Rev. Matthew Hoover officiating. Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing; however, the family will receive friends Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
