Hagerstown Regional Airport surpassed 10,000 paying customers for commercial air service in 2012, securing a $1 million entitlement through the Federal Aviation Administration, Airport Director Phil Ridenour said last week.

The airport totaled 10,207 enplanements, or passenger boardings, for Allegiant Air and Sun Air flights in the 2012 calendar year, up from 2011’s total of 5,618 passengers, according to FAA statistics.

The additional funds will be used for infrastructure improvements, general upkeep and safety projects, Ridenour said.

The airport will soon be adding a new aircraft crash truck to its on-site fire department, and the money could be used to offset the county’s 5-percent contribution for the vehicle, which costs more than $500,000, Ridenour said.

Ninety percent of the cost will be covered by an FAA grant and the other 5 percent will be paid by the state.

“It’s a huge difference,” Ridenour said, noting that the airport would have received only $150,000 had it not eclipsed the 10,000-passenger mark.

Ridenour said the money will be rolled into the county’s upcoming fiscal year’s budget for projects at the airport.

The lower enplanements in 2011 were due to only Cape Air commuter service being offered at the airport.

However, Ridenour said the $1 million entitlement was still received because of a letter of intent from the FAA as a contribution to the recently completed runway extension project.

Hagerstown Regional Airport also surpassed 10,000 enplanements in 2009 and 2010, totaling 13,365 and 10,665, respectively, according to FAA records.
