CLEAR SPRING — A Big Pool man was taken into custody Saturday morning following an altercation in which shots were fired, according to a Maryland State Police news release.

Daniel Lapole, 31, was charged with first- and second-degree assault, having a handgun in a vehicle, use of a firearm in a violent crime and reckless endangerment, according to Washington County District Court records.

State police troopers and Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 12021 Big Pool Road following a 1:05 a.m. report of shots fired, troopers said.

Investigators determined there was an altercation between Lapole and George Rodgers, 43, of Clear Spring, troopers said.

Rodgers approached Lapole with a large pipe wrench during the altercation, troopers said.

Lapole got a small-caliber handgun, climbed into his vehicle and fired several shots in the direction of Rodgers, who fled the scene on foot, troopers said.
