Sharpsburg wins state softball title

CHESAPEAKE CITY, Md. — Karly Payne pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts and Sharpsburg claimed the Maryland 11-12 state championship with a 10-0 shutout victory over Chesapeake City on Wednesday that was halted after 3 1/2 innings by the 10-run rule.

Sharpsburg used a balance hitting attack and batted around in the first inning, scoring six runs in the frame.

Payne and Taylor Neff each had an RBI and scored two runs and Josie Minnick had an RBI for Sharpsburg.

Sharpsburg will open play in the regional tournament in Bristol, Conn., on July 20 against Delaware.


GOLF
Schultz finishes third

TOWSON, Md. — Beaver Creek Country Club pro Dirk Schultz made a run toward the top, but could not overcome two other golfers in the 92nd Maryland Open championship on Wednesday.

Schultz, after two rounds with even-par 69s, came out and shot a 3-under-par 66, leaving him with a 3-under 204 for the Open, good for third place. He had already finished second in four previous Opens.

Schultz had a pair of birdies in his front nine 2-under 32 and went 1-under with a 34 on the back nine with three birdies and two bogeys, one on a par-5 from 542 yards.

McCarthy, a 20-year-old from Argyle Country Club, also shot a 66 and finished as the champion with a 7-under 200.
Fountain Head Country Club pro Jim Schouller shot a third-round 3-over 72 that left him at 7-over 214 for a 24th-place tie and Beaver Creek’s Chuck Thatcher had a 4-over 73 for a tie in 33rd place with a 9-over 216.
