FUNKSTOWN — J.T. Root fired a complete-game two-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead Funkstown Post 211 to an 11-4 win over Woodsboro Post 282 on Wednesday in a Western Maryland District American Legion baseball game.

“I thought the team played a good ballgame,” said Root, who raised his record to 4-2. “In that third inning, I was a little wild. I couldn’t find the strike zone. After that, everything seemed to settle down. The defense was playing good behind me and we started hitting the ball.”

“J.T. Root threw a good ballgame,” Funkstown manager Patrick Moore said. “He lost a little bit of focus in the third inning. After that, he threw very well and he located his slider well.”

Ryan Butts had three hits for Funkstown (14-5 overall, 6-2 district), which is in first place in the Western Maryland District.

After Woodsboro (6-4 district) got three runs in the top of the third inning, Funkstown responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good at 4-3.

Mark Grunberg led off with a double to left. When Brad Spickler reached on a bunt single, Grunberg came home on a throwing error. After Charles Cvijanovich walked, Zach Lucas belted a RBI double to right. Colby Johnson hit an RBI single to center and Brandon Toloso had a sacrifice fly to center.

Funkstown added seven more runs in the fifth to raise its lead to 11-3. Butts ripped a two-run double to center and scored on a RBI double to left by Root. Grunberg and Cvijanovich got a RBI single each, while Lucas added a sacrifice fly. Spickler scored the final run on a double steal.

“I think that it was the most runs that we have scored all season,” Moore said. “One through nine, we can hit the ball well.”
