Mary Julia "Peggy" Arcidiacono, 89, of Hagerstown passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at the Western Maryland Hospital Center in Hagerstown.

Born July 29, 1923, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Julia M. (Topper) Fitzgerald.

Peggy retired from St. Maria Goretti High School and the Maryland Correctional Training Center as a teacher.

She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Hagerstown.

In addition to volunteering her time with various organizations, she belonged to the Antietam Daughters of the American Revolution, and helped form the Washington County Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

She is survived by her loving husband, Thomas Arcidiacono; three children, Ted Arcidiacono, Barbara Bacon and husband, Dr. Allan Bacon, and Diana Arcidiacono, all of Hagerstown; three sisters, Betty Garner, of Emmitsburg, Md., Jane Virbal of Pennsylvania and Josephine O'Rourke of Georgia; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Jef Fitzgerald; and two sisters, Pat Rocks and Dot Coleman.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 13, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Deacon Gary Fulmer officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday one hour before services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Peggy's name to Brook Lane Health Services, 13218 Brook Lane Drive, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
