GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Thousands of shoppers will pack the streets of downtown Greencastle on Friday and Saturday for Sidewalk Days.

The annual event, sponsored by the Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce, is Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This is our 46th year of value and savings,” said Joel Fridgen, executive director of the chamber.

The in-town merchants will be joined by more than 60 arts, craft and food vendors setting up tables on East and West Baltimore streets and North and South Carlisle streets, Fridgen said.

A portion of South Carlisle Street next to the square will be closed to traffic, but all other streets will be open, according to event organizers.

Parking lots are available next to both North and South Carlisle streets at the Learning Center lots at 35 N. Carlisle St. and at the Greencastle Church of the Brethren at 36 S. Carlisle St.

“From a merchant’s standpoint, it’s an essential time to give us a way to put our goods in front of a lot of people in a short amount of time,” said Loren Martin, president of E.L.M. Shoes Inc.

“We sell as much in two days as we normally do in 10 days,” he said.

The two-day event is a way for merchants to clear out summer items to make room for fall merchandise, Martin said.

At E.L.M. Shoes, Martin said shoppers will see prices slashed up to 70 percent as the store tries to reduce its inventory and clear out spring and summer goods.

The Jewelry Shop at 18 E. Baltimore St. is participating in Sidewalk Days and will be selling some of its items outside its store at reduced prices.

“It’s an opportunity to have our downtown area showcased and have people come in a maybe more relaxed environment to do their browsing and shopping,” said Marjorie Motichka, who works in marketing and sales for The Jewelry Shop.

She likes the fun-fair atmosphere that Sidewalk Days creates in downtown Greencastle by combining food, vendors, entertainment on the square and a Kids Zone from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Friday and Saturday) on North Carlisle Street.

“Besides the great deals from the existing merchants, we also have a lot of different vendors. So, you’ll have an opportunity to see displays of wares that you don’t normally see in downtown Greencastle and then the food is the big thing,” Motichka said.
