July 10, 2013

Matt Semler, who was principal at Winter Street Elementary School in Hagerstown for seven years, was recently named director of elementary education for Washington County Public Schools.

He succeeds Steve Wernick, who left the school system this summer to take a job as an elementary school principal in Carroll County, Md.

Semler’s annual salary increases from $97,695 to $108,693 with the promotion, according to the school system.

Semler, who lives in Hagerstown, said he grew up in the city and is a 1994 graduate of St. Maria Goretti High School.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and a master’s degree in administration and supervision from Shenandoah University, according to a school system news release.

Before becoming principal at Winter Street in the city’s West End, Semler was an assistant principal for a year at Bester Elementary in the South End.

Semler was a teacher and administrator for Loudoun County (Va.) Public Schools for seven years before joining Washington County schools.

The new principal at Winter Street is Lura A. Hanks.
