Some clarification on The Maryland Theatre

To the editor:

Recently I had submitted a letter to the editor (June 14th) regarding The Maryland Theatre, and the critical role that I believe it will play in bringing life back to downtown Hagerstown. Since the publishing of this letter, I have received a lot of feedback from both The Maryland Theatre staff and board, as well as citizens throughout the area.

As such, I would like to extend my gratitude for the various, mostly positive feedback; however, I would also like to clarify some of the positions that I had previously submitted.

First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge and underscore the professionalism of the current Maryland Theatre staff and board. The intent of my previous letter was to positively encourage having entertainment geared toward a broader demographic on a more frequent basis. It was not meant to undermine what the current staff and board has accomplished, as some may have perceived.

Furthermore, after having discussions with the theater representatives, some of the constraints regarding the operations of the theater have been brought to my attention. Given the age of the structure and some of the equipment incorporated within the facility, operational costs are significant. That in turn impacts the funding available within their budget, including event productions.   In this respect, it is my opinion that it would behoove the local governments to provide greater assistance for structural and technical improvements to the theater.

Such funding would further alleviate some of the budgetary issues associated with the theater, create a better atmosphere for the theater-goers, and allow for a somewhat higher degree of risk in the assortment of entertainment provided, which truly would be a benefit to the community.

Although I still feel that the theater should gear more shows toward the younger adult demographic, I am truly grateful that the theater took the time to listen and follow up with me. I am also confident that the staff and board currently working at the theater will find ways to broaden the productions generated to the community, given the stable financial footing that the theater has achieved in recent years. And when the time comes, and shows that pique my interest are presented, I will most certainly support the theater through ticket purchases or donations.
