CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A St. Thomas, Pa., teenager who was runner-up in the 2012 Franklin County (Pa.) Fair Queen contest took top honors in the competition Monday.

Maranda McGowan, 16, was crowned fair queen in a ceremony focused on speeches, essays and answers to an interview question.

Maranda shared some memories from past fairs with the crowd.

“There are so many fun things to do and only seven days to do them,” she said.

The fair on Warm Spring Road continues through Saturday.

Mindy Hooven, 19, of Fayetteville, Pa., and Jennifer Warren, 17, of Shippensburg, Pa., also participated in the contest, with Mindy being named Maranda’s alternate. Earlier in the day, Autumn Shatzer, 10, was named Little Miss and Jacqueline Swope, 15, was named Fair Princess.

Maranda attends James Buchanan High School. She is the daughter of Dave McGowan and Lori Hartman.

“The fair is about bonding and creating traditions with family and friends,” she said.

Some of her earliest memories at the fair include the petting zoo, at which she always asked to take the animals home.

The 2012 queen, Hannah Horst, thanked her court and talked about some of the year’s activities. She said she slept in her car on the fairgrounds the night after she was crowned and awoke early the next day to care for her calf.

Maranda said she is looking forward to the state competition.
