HAGERSTOWN — City police on Tuesday arrested a 23-year-old Hagerstown man following an afternoon argument that started at the Clarion Hotel on Dual Highway and culminated when a gunshot was fired through a rear window of a vehicle near the intersection of Dual Highway and Edgewood Drive.

Andrew Martin Campos of 117 N. Mulberry St. was charged with attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless endangerment and wearing and carrying a handgun, according to Sgt. John Lehman of the Hagerstown Police Department.

A Washington County District Court commissioner ordered Campos held on $400,000 bond Tuesday night, according to an officer at the county detention center’s central booking facility.

Campos and another male and a female were involved in an argument over property at the Clarion Hotel at 901 Dual Highway, city police Lt. Tom Langston said.

Campos left in a red Ford Explorer, and the male and female drove off in a Volkswagen Passat, Langston said.

Police believe Campos was driving behind the Volkswagen when he went around the Passat on eastbound Dual Highway at about 2:39 p.m. and fired a shot into the car’s rear driver’s-side window with a semiautomatic handgun, Langston said.

The bullet became lodged in the interior of the car, he said.

The driver of the Volkswagen made a U-turn after the shooting and drove immediately to the city police station on Burhans Boulevard, police said.

Although the Ford Explorer left in an unknown direction, the vehicle and the handgun were later recovered, police said.

People working at about seven businesses around the intersection of Dual Highway and Edgewood Drive said they did not hear a gunshot or notice anything unusual when the shooting occurred.
