SHARPSBURG — Rodney Burgan knew if his club could start hitting the ball with authority, they’d be just fine.

And the Sharpsburg Little League All-Stars proved their manager right, pounding out seven hits in a 10-run third inning on their way to a 14-6 win over Federal in the Maryland District 1 11-12 losers’ bracket final Monday night.

The win propels Sharpsburg to Tuesday’s championship-round game at 6 p.m. at Conococheague.

“Our hits came tonight,” said Burgan. “I’ve been telling them this entire tournament that if we hit the ball, we’ll win some games.”

T.J. Kalagher and Ben Burgan got the big inning started with back-to-back solo home runs — two of three homers in the inning — erasing a 4-2 Federal lead.

Ryan Nolan followed with a double and scored on a one-out single by Aaron Hartle. After John Grimm singled, and was forced at second on a T.J. Reeder ground ball, Josh DeRocher singled to score Hartle. Dalton Shank’s double plated Reeder and DeRocher, and a Kalagher single made it 9-4. Ben Burgan then reached on an error, moving Kalagher to third before Nolan finished the inning with a three-run blast for a 12-4 Sharpsburg advantage.

“They’re a good-hitting team,” said Federal manager Mike Murray. “If we had made a couple of plays we could have made — and should have made — we would have been out of that inning with just a couple of runs. But that’s little league baseball.”

Shank, Sharpsburg’s starter, struggled early, giving up a solo home run to Federal’s first hitter of the game, Kevin Abeles.

Sharpsburg scored twice in the first on a pair of singles and a pair of groundouts to make it 2-1.

Camden Casey walked to open the second inning for Federal before Shank yielded a two-run homer to Luke O’Dell. Brayden Quirple followed with a one-out single, before scoring on a Seamus Murray double for a 4-2 lead.

Sharpsburg scored one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, and Federal added a pair in the top of the fifth on a Jakob Connor solo homer run, and an RBI single from O’Dell.

Conococheague can claim the District 1 crown with a win tonight. If Sharpsburg wins, the championship game will be at Sharpsburg on Wednesday at 6.
