Federal knocks out National in 11-12 tourney

Harris Blackwood hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Federal defeated National in a Maryland District 1 11-12 losers’ bracket game that was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Federal poured it on the second inning, scoring 10 runs in the frame.

Andrew Blake had three hits and three RBIs, Kevin Abeles, Seamus Murray and Ian Selby had two hits each and Blake, Todd Stocks and Brayden Quirple combined on a four-hitter for Federal.

Brock Penn and Adam Mathias each homered for National.

Funkstown rallies for win at Wooden Bat Tournament

FREDERICK, Md. — Brad Enfield hit a game-winning double to cap a four-run rally on Friday to lift Funkstown Post 211 to a 6-5 victory over Hampton Township in the second day of the Frederick American Legion Wooden Bat Tournament.

Mark Grunberg started the rally with an RBI double before Zach Lucas hit a game-tying, two-run double with two outs in the top of the seventh, before Enfield’s game-winning hit.

Funkstown (2-0-1) took a 2-0 lead in the firt on a sacrifice fly by Lucas and Colby Johnson’s RBI single.

Hampton Township scored three runs in the third and two in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.

J.T. Root won the game in relief, allowing one hit in two innings while striking out four. John Britton started, going four innings, allowing two earned runs on one hit with four strikeouts.

Funkstown plays Laurel on Saturday at 11 a.m. at McCurdy Field. The field for Sunday’s championship round will be set after the game.

Funkstown opened the tournament on Thursday with a 3-3 tie against Damascus in a game that was halted after six innings because of a time limit.

Root had two hits and two RBIs to lead Post 211. Ryan Kinter started, allowing two earned runs on five hits, while striking out four. Ian Moss and Aaron Jones closed out the game for Funkstown.

Funkstown got its first win of the tournament later Thursday with a 12-0 rout of Putty Hill behind starter Hunter McKinley, who allowed two hits and struck out three over five innings. Grunberg and Charles Cvijanovich had two hits and two RBIs each to lead Funkstown. C.J. Owings drove in two runs and Brandon Toloso added two hits.
