Smith's grand slam lifts Valley over Clear Spring

YOUTH BASEBALL

Valley 16, Clear Spring 15

Chris Smith delivered a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to keep Valley alive with the losers’ bracket win over Clear Spring on Wednesday night in the Maryland District 1 11-12 tournament.

It was Martin’s second home run of the game. Brenden Kemp and Chase Miller each homored and Sean Simpson had two hits in the victory.

Valley rallied from a 15-6 deficit heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Cole Weaver and Jarred Wilson hit home runs for Clear Spring and Cole Easterday had three hits.

National 14, Hancock 11

Adam Mathias came up big at the plate with three hits, including two home runs, to lead National past Hancock in a Maryland District 1 11-12 losers’ bracket game.

Mathias smacked a two-run homer in the first, followed by a grand slam to highlight an eight-run third for National.

Jacquan Young had three hits, Cody Crawford and Jake Pence had two hits each and Brock Penn had six strikeouts for National.

Ethan Souders had three home runs, Eaven Gordon and Justice Allen each had a homer and Gabe Stotler and Brady Souders had two hits each for Hancock.

Federal will host National on Friday at 6 p.m.


LEGION BASEBALL

Frederick 2, Funkstown 0

FUNKSTOWN — Frederick scored two runs in the top of the eighth to beat Funkstown on Tuesday.

Mark Grunberg had two hits and J.T. Root had four strikeouts for Funkstown (8-4).


MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Binford wins fifth

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Hagerstown’s Christian Binford picked up his fifth win of the year on Tuesday night as Lexington defeated Greenville 7-1 in the South Atlantic League.

In the second game of a doubleheader, Binford pitched the first five innings of the seven-inning game, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out six.

Binford is now 5-3 with a 2.08 earned run average.

Hose in relief action

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — Former North Hagerstown pitcher T.J. Hose is pitching for the independent Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League and saw action in the Ducks’ 4-3 win over Somerset on Tuesday in front of 6,532 fans at Bethpage Park.

Hose pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief with one strikeout, making his 23rd appearance of the year, all in relief. Hose is 1-1 with a 3.28 ERA in 24 2/3 innings of work.

Hose previously spent time in the Boston and Arizona organizations. He was drafted by Arizona in 2008.


YOUTH SOFTBALL

District 1 Junior Tournament

Halfway 9, Sharpsburg 5

Megan Black hit two home runs and drove in three runs to lead Halfway past Sharpsburg in Game 1 of the best-of-3 series on Tuesday.

Morgan Domer had two hits, including a home run, and Courtney McGhee added two hits for Halfway.

Carley Cline and Tori Kulikowski had two hits each for Sharpsburg.
