United Way of Washington County planning annual Day of Caring for Oct. 3

United Way of Washington County will host its 22nd annual Day of Caring on Thursday, Oct. 3.

The event mobilizes volunteers to work on a variety of service projects at local nonprofit organizations.

Tasks include painting, light construction and minor repairs, as well as a variety of agency activities.

Day of Caring volunteers also tackle safety-related projects at elderly and disabled residents’ homes, such as fall prevention, accessibility and fire safety.

Examples of these projects include stair repair, grab bar and handrail installation, installing adequate lighting and smoke detector checks.

The 2012 Day of Caring, which was supported by numerous local businesses including lead sponsor First Data and approximately 900 volunteers, provided services to 73 sites, which included 56 agencies and 17 residential homes.

Agency and residential project applications are available on the United Way website at www.unitedwaywashcounty.org as are applications for individual volunteers and teams.

All applications must be sent to UnitedWayDayofCaring@firstdata.com and received by the following deadlines:

• Project applications are due by Aug. 2.

• Volunteer applications are due by Aug. 30.

Volunteers will be matched with projects. All selected project applicants and volunteers will be notified.
