Seven-vehicle crash on U.S. 340 bridge caused by rear-end collision

June 30, 2013

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. — A crash on the U.S. 340 bridge Sunday afternoon that involved seven vehicles was caused by a rear-end collision on the span that connects Maryland and Virginia, a Maryland State Police spokesman said.

The rear-end collision started a chain reaction crash of vehicles, one of which had a trailer, according to the spokesman and another official.

The crash was reported at 1:32 p.m. The bridge was reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m., officials said.

No serious injuries were reported from the accident.

Three patients with minor injuries were taken to area hospitals, a Washington County 911 supervisor said.

Approximately 14 people refused medical treatment, he said.

Emergency service personnel from Washington and Frederick counties in Maryland, and Loudoun County, Va., responded, he said.
