Sharpsburg wins District 1 9-10 softball crown

SHARPSBURG — Bri Pittsnogle struck out 10 and Madison Griffith drove in four runs as Sharpsburg defeated Hancock 18-14 on Friday night to win the best-of-3 Maryland District 1 9-10 championship series, 2-0.

Courtney Burgan and Rachel Roupe each had two hits for Sharpsburg, which will start play in the state tournament on July 13 in Ridgely.

Cora Keefer had three hits and four RBIs, Kylie Golden had two hits and Lakyn Unger scored three runs for Hancock.


District 1 Junior Tournament

Valley 6, Hancock 1

HANCOCK — Valley made the most of its three hits, defeating Hancock on Friday in the winners’ bracket final.

Valley will host the first game of the championship round on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Valley needs one win in the championship round to win the district title.

Dakota Reed had two hits for Hancock, which will host Maugansville on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in the losers’ bracket final. The winner will reach the championship round and will need two wins over Valley to claim the title.

Funkstown 9, Mt. Airy 8

FUNKSTOWN — Funkstown scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh — with the winning run scoring on an error — to knock off Mt. Airy in a Western Maryland District contest on Friday.

Zach Lucas homered and had three hits for Funkstown (7-3, 4-1), and Andrew Yacyk added a home run and three RBIs. Mark Grunberg and Ryan Butts had two hits each.


PA Poison softball tryouts

The PA Poison fastpitch softball youth travel organization will field 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U teams for the 2014 season. Tryouts will be held at the Kauffman Ruritan fields at 7289 Ruritan Dr. in Chambersburg, Pa., at the following times:

July 31 — 10U and 12U, 6 to 8 p.m.

Aug. 1 — 10U and 12U, 6 to 8 p.m.

Aug. 4 — 10U and 12U, 3 to 5 p.m.

Aug. 7 — 14U, 16U and 18U, 6 to 8 p.m.

Aug. 11 — 14U, 16U and 18U, 3 to 5 p.m.

Aug. 14 — 14U, 16U and 18U, 6 to 8 p.m.

Discovery Classic golf tourney

The Discovery Classic annual golf tournament, benefitting Discovery Station at Hagerstown, Inc., will be held July 19 at Black Rock, with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. Cost is $80 per golfer, $100 per hole sponsorship, or $400 per foursome plus hole sponsorship. Prizes will be awarded to the top three places in each flight, and the entry fee includes lunch, a duffer’s bag, beverage cart and free range balls before the shotgun start.
