June 26, 2013

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia answered Hagerstown’s run in the top of the 12th with two in the bottom of the 12th as the Power stunned the Suns 7-6 on Wednesday night in the South Atlantic League.

Facing Suns reliever Cody Davis (1-1) — who had worked a scoreless 10th and 11th — Walker Gourley led off the bottom of the 12th with a single to right and Jordan Steranka walked. Raul Fortunato followed with a bunt single in front of the plate, and Hagerstown catcher Pedro Severino compounded the trouble by throwing the ball away, allowing Gourley to score to tie the game at 6.

Max Moroff followed with a walk-off single to right, scoring Steranka with the winning run.

Hagerstown (42-32, 4-3) fell a game behind West Virginia (42-35, 5-2), Delmarva and Hickory in the Northern Division standings.

The Suns had taken a 6-5 lead in the top of the 12th. Will Piwnica-Worms led off with a single, went to second on Estarlin Martinez’s sacrifice bunt and took third on Matt Foat’s groundout to second. Severino followed with a grounder to third that Power third baseman D.J. Crumlich fielded cleanly, but his throw was off the mark and Piwnica-Worms scored.

The Suns came out of the gates with two runs in the top of the first. Tony Renda led off with a walk, Shawn Pleffner hit a one-out single and Brandon Miller followed with a two-run double to center.

The Power responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. The rally started with a walk and a Suns error. Steranka hit an RBI single, and with two outs, Moroff drove a two-run double to left and Crumlich added an RBI single.

The Suns scored a run in the fifth and another in the seventh to tie the game at 4.

In the fifth, Renda led off with a single and scored on Miller’s RBI single. Miller was later thrown out at home trying to score on Piwnica-Worms’ single to right for the third out.

In the seventh, Stephen Perez led off with a double to right and Pleffner followed with an RBI double to left.

Hagerstown took a 5-4 lead in the ninth when Perez led off with single and scored on Piwnica-Worms’ two-out RBI double to right.

But West Virginia tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the ninth on Barrett Barnes’ home run with one out.

Suns starter Nick Lee worked the first four innings, allowing four runs — none earned — on six hits and a walk while striking out four. Gilberto Mendez worked three scoreless innings in relief.

Power starter John Kuchno went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. Pat Ludwig (6-0) earned the victory, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two over the final three innings.
