CORVALLIS, Ore. — Beaver Creek Country Club pro Dirk Schultz left himself in a favorable position after the first round of the PGA Players National Championship on Sunday at Sunriver Resort.

Playing his first round on the 6,969-yard par-71 Meadows Course, Schultz carded a 2-under-par 69 that put him in a tie for 15th.

Schultz opened his round by playing steady golf with 14 straight pars, going through the back nine in a steady rain in the Northwest Highlands. He finally knocked in birdies on the par-4 15th and 16th to get to 2 under.

Fountain Head pro Jim Schouller was not as fortunate, unable to get on any kind of birdie train. Schouller had a double bogey and three bogeys on the way to a 5-over-par 76, leaving him in a tie for 219th.

Rod Perry, of Port Orange, Fla., and Corey Prugh, of Spokane, Wash., shared the first-round lead, each setting a new Meadows course record with an 8-under-par 63.

After today’s second round, with Schultz playing on the longer Crosswater Club course, the field of 312 will be sliced to the top 70 and ties for the final two rounds.

At stake is a top 20 finish that will garner players a spot in the PGA Championship in August.
