June 23, 2013

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Brandon Miller hit his team-leading 14th home run, Tony Renda had two hits and two RBIs, and Matt Purke struck out nine in five innings as the Hagerstown Suns shut out the Greenville Drive 6-0 on Sunday in the South Atlantic League.

The Suns (41-30, 3-1) took three of four games from the Drive (23-50, 1-3) to start the second half. Hagerstown won the Northern Division’s first-half title.

The Suns opened the scoring with two runs in the second. Estarlin Martinez and Matt Foat drew one-out walks, and Criag Manuel and Renda hit RBI singles.

Hagerstown tacked on two more runs in the third for a 4-0 lead. Shawn Pleffner led off with a single to set up Miller’s two-run blast to center.

Wes Schill hit a one-out triple to center and scored on Renda’s sacrifice fly to make it 5-0 in the fourth.

A Greenville throwing error led to another Suns run in the sixth. Wes Schill — who went 2-for-3 — walked and Renda singled to load the bases before Stephen Perez hit a sacrifice fly for a 6-0 lead.

That was all she wrote for Drive starter Jacob Dahlstrand (1-3), who gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four.

Purke (1-1) allowed four hits and a walk. Ronald Pena, Bryan Harper and Gilberto Mendez finished off the shutout for the Suns. Mendez struck out three over the final 1 2/3 innings.
